I had a confilct with hwdata and yumex removed it and all it's dependencies....by mistake.
No more GUI, no nore bash shelll. But it didn't destroy all my configuration info for networking webserver etc...and I'm hompeful I can get things back to normal with some help...
What I did to try and fix it was was upgraded to FC5(from FC4) but now I can't start my GUI
startx says "bash: command not found"
system-config-display lets me change setting but on exit there's an error message that says. Windows Manager warning: failed to read from file /usr/share/themes...metacity.xml
I checked and there is no directory "themes" it must have been deleted by my yumex mistake.
How can I get the Windows Manager Bback? What do I need to install/config?
A final message I got says, Windows Manager warning: Lost Connection to Display: ':17.0": most likely the xserver was shut down or you lled/destroyed the windows manager.
Can someone tell me the best way to restore my windows manager/GUI?
Thank you!, Jim

For the X problem, running yum groupinstall "X Window System" might work. For the rest, you might try installing known missing packages in the hope that the installation will pull in all of the missing pieces.

That is probably what happened.

yum groupinstall "X Window System" is my only guess.

yum is gone also, how can I install yum?
Thanks, Jim

If you can mount the install media, you might get yum installed of the discs using rpm. There are probably dependency problems so it would not be too much fun. (Unless you are on a mission to resolve required packages manually.) You would need to add the needed package to your rpm install command line.
It sounds like you have the system in the state where I had one installation after running apt-get in the past. you might want to backup your important data and then do a clean install. I lost the ability to even login after my fiasco, at least you have some programs left.

You read my mind...backup is done. I tried installing a fresh copy of FC5.
Now when I reboot after an install my monitor gives me a "Signal out of range" and goes into sleep mode before booting is complete....and it soesn't come back.. any ideas?
I have HP f2105. They don't support Linux..

Edit the boot commands in GRUB, add a space and the number 3 to the kernel command line (telling the kernel to boot in runlevel 3, i.e. without GUI), log in as root and run: system-config-display --reconfig Configure a valid (resolution, color depth, refresh rate) triplet, click OK and reboot (this time without forcing runlevel 3).

system-config-display --reconfig doesn't work from linux rescue.
This whole problem came about because I changed the display setting from within KDE even though it had correctley identified the monitor and gave me a list of valid resolutions.
In the future is anyone changes the display resolution it would be best if I had a default caonfig file I could restore.
When you update the display resolution, what file gets updated on disk?.
Thanks, Jim

system-config-display --reconfig doesn't work from linux rescue.
Which is why I asked you to boot the live system into runlevel 3, not to boot from the rescue disk. This kind of situations is what GRUB lets you edit the kernel command line for.
I forgot one thing though in the above instructions: Your kernel command line probably contains "rhgb" (as this is set by default). That is the Red Hat Graphical Boot, which runs X11 even before you can login to the console. So remove "rghb" from the kernel command line and write "3" (without the quotes) there instead.

grub is setup to hide the menu. So the first thing you want to do is press a key in order to show the available kernel and other OS choices.
Next you want to press the "a" key in order to get into the append mode. This will put you on the line where you can add or remove options you want to supply to the boot process. You can backspace out rhgb and the word quiet in order to see the boot messages and to get rid of the GUI boot message display.
If you want to boot into runlevel 3 where X does not start unless you run startx from the console, you would put a space after the last entry and then the number 3, followed by pressing enter to start the boot process.
If you needed to add any other special option to the boot stanza, it is accomplished in much the same way.

Are you using the DVI-D input (White cable if I remember) or the VGA (blue cable) to the monitor. You should be able to set your desired default settings in the Monitor menu. I have a Dell monitor which I use the VGA cable and it works. I did not try the DVI-D input in Linux for this display. At least you have a basic system that you can try to start in runlevel 3 to try to reconfigure the display. You might try to see if the graphical login (rhgb) is causing the problem first. You can hit a key to show the boot menu, highlight your desired kernel, press the a key (for appending information on the boot line.) Once you are on the kernel line, backspace out the rhgb information followed by hitting enter to boot the computer.
