Hi All,
I have my laptop configured in dual boot mode. I have Windows XP home
edition installed on NTFS filesystem and FC1 on other. When i tried to
mount the NTFS filesystem from FC1, i got the message that NTFS filesystem
cannot be mounted.
Is there a way I can mount these partitions in Linux or do i have to
change the NTFS filesystem to someother that can be accessed from Linux.?

NTFS can be mounted but it is read-only. It cannot be written within
Linux! Follow instructions here to get your partition mounted. :-p This

NTFS can be mounted but it is read-only. It cannot be written within

Their demo version apparently is read-only so we can't know for sure
whether it really works or not! :-)

I own their Partition Manager for Windows and it worked nicely for me..
actually it worked for me on a system where Partition Magic refused to
resize a volume because of a bug in PM. (I forget why it was because it was
a while ago, but their app saved me.)

The Fedora kernel does not support NTFS out of the box for legal
reasons. You can find a kernel module at

Sure seems like there is an NTFS driver in the kernel-source RPMS.... and
per the readme there is write support in the driver, but they only say it
works for "NT 4.0" so perhaps if you have a Dynamic disk in 2000 / XP it
can't write to it, but a Basic disk should be the same NTFS for NT 4 / 2k /
XP ... no?

NTFS version changed on Windows[tm] from Win2k and earlier to WinXP from
version 4 to version 5.
If you like to damage existing NTFS partitions with Linux write access
to them, just go ahead :)

Yes, as has been repeated here and on other RH lists, for legal reasons.
Parts of NTFS are apparently covered by patents held by Microsoft.
Patent law covers any implementation, so _any_ version written for Linux
that isn't license by Microsoft is probably infringing and won't be
included in Fedora.

Yes, it is a filesystem but not like any other. It is patented and
Microsoft's IP. All built in support would do is provide another
potential legal bullseye. If you have not guessed already, Red Hat and
now Fedora is about staying out of the line of fire. So no non-free and
private IP will be included.
Yes it is a tad annoying but you have a link to add support yourself, so
i suggest getting past this and following through.

Actually it isn't.
If we tamper with the linux-$version.tar tarball, the md5's/.signs from
upstream would differ, which would break the current build process.
If we added a patch to remove fs/ntfs, that patch would get distributed
with the kernel .src.rpm
I imagine our legal folks have already done the legwork on this one, and
come to the conclusion that shipping the source isn't a problem, whereas
shipping a binary is.

Am I imagining things here? I was able to mount NTFS on Fedora until
upgrading the kernel to 2.4.22-1.2140 or maybe 2149, not sure.
Everyone's talking as if it was never supported, but I can assure you it
was. I didn't see any announcements about dropping NTFS support, but
until a few weeks ago I was definitely able to mount my XP NTFS
partition read-only with a standard Fedora kernel.

No! NTFS support was in no official Fedora Core 1 kernel activated.
You may had installed the kernel module package from the sourceforge
project.

You'll need to follow the steps to find out what kernel you are running,
cpu, etc and to download the specific RPM to enable NTFS support.
Note that it is read-only support.
