My graphical desktop all of s sudden does not come up. I can bring it up manually: export DISPLAY=:0 nohup Xorg & nohup startxfce4 &
However, mouse and KB do not work, so I am unable to login to the desktop. I can only use the text console.
Not sure if this is a udev issue or Xorg issue.

I found the cause of the problem. The file /etc/sysconfig/desktop was clobberred (modified) and gdm would no longer be started.
Once I restored it to starting /usr/sbin/gdm desktop came up like before.
