proper editor for that. Do you recommend Kate to me? Or is there

It's not just an Editor, it's an Integrated Development Environment
(IDE) - but it is in Fedora.

There's a number of options, all present in the fedora repositories. I
suggest you try a few and see which you like. Here's some suggestions:
1) Programmers text editors such as emacs and vim. These are
exceptionally powerful, but have a bit of a learning curve.
2) IDEs. There are several in fedora including anjuta, geany,
kdevelop, eclipse. For eclipse you'll also want to install the
eclipse-cdt package for c/c++ editing.
That said, even the simple gedit, which is installed by default has
good syntax highlighting for c/c++.
Try a few, see what you're comfortable with.

As others have explained, any text editor might do. I can recommend two of
them. One is kile:
yum install kile
It is primarilly intended for TeX, but it is a very powerful editor in its own
right, and can do c/c++ syntax highlighting and all other things an editor
should be able to.
The other is emacs:
yum install emacs
It is also feature-complete. Can even act as a psychiatrist and chat with you
when you feel down. ;-) Everyone should try it at least once. ;-)

of them.
The one thing that vi has over every other editor in the world
is that it's present on all UNIX (like) systems by default, so if you
can get around in it somewhat, you'll be able to use any random
system you walk up to. That used to be an argument for ed :-)
For that reason, I've made sure I can more or less get along with
vi, though I don't use it on my system. Since emacs doesn't have
that advantage, I don't ever use it.
Anyway, that's the one recommendation I can make. Make sure you
can use vi a little bit, even if you don't like it, because it
is always present (unless the sysadmins are anti - vi maniacs and
have deleted it).
For your own machine, find and install an editor you like,
configure it the way you want, and use that. If necessary
port it to other machines as necessary, like where you work.
Unless, of course, they insist that you use some editor they
already have, in which case, grit your teeth and learn to
use it.
BTW, don't delete either emacs or vi from your system, since
other pieces of it may depend on their existence. I've got
both installed (and vi's descendent vim) though I never run
any of 'em, for that reason.

than vim. Changing font, for example, is such a pain :S (no useful fonts are
available in Shift+Click menu).

Emacs still uses the legacy font system (at least as of
emacs-22.3-4.fc10.x86_64). IIRC, integrating the new font system is in
the works for a forthcoming release, but I don't recall which or when.

the DEC operating system, VMS, and proponents of UNIX. Then there were
flames between AT&T UNIX and Berklix UNIX. Then LINUX vs. Windows. The
beat goes on.
Then I got embroiled in a serious discussion of the OS and network
protocol to be used on NASA's supercomputer wind tunnel-in-a-computer
project. The competitors were Cray Operating system, COS, with LINKS a
suite of network protocols vs. UNIX and TCP/IP. IIRC there was a bit of
early support for SNA as a network protocol as well as OSI which was
being urged to be THE U. S. Government's network protocol suite. At a
big deal meeting to hash it out I had not come to a position but at the
meeting I listened and opted for the UNIX TCP/IP option, and a proponent
of another position offered to take a swing at me. A Civil Servant
stepped in to save my ass. Those were the days.
This VIM/ Emacs debate seems to crop up periodically to no great effect
in arriving at any decision. We all end up using the tools with which
they are most comfortable. And these flame wars SOLVE NOTHING.

IMHO EMACS is not better than Vi. They both have their uses and are both
excellent. I stated that I much prefer EMACS for development over most
other editors, including some IDEs. I like the ability in emacs to be
able to edit multiple files simultaneously and display them in windows
although vi also can edit multiple files too. I also prefer that emacs
can run scripts, commands or compiles capturing results in windows.
My personal preference is to use emacs for development, but to use vi
for remote editing and quick editing of some files.

KDE user here, and I think his opinion is not far from the truth (though
IMHO vi and Emacs are equally useless, there isn't one "worse" than the

Emacs is my editor of choice, and I disagree it has a learning curve.
If all you want is to type and save files, its as easy as any other
simple GUI based editor. If you want to get clever, then yes it takes
some learning, but it is ultimately more powerful than most others too.

think Emacs is overblown for an editor. A comment I made about Emacs
about '82 or so on Usenet was, "If I wanted an operating system, I'd
get one. Emacs has everything except the kitchen sink."
And someone pointed out the icon for Emacs was...well, guess.
Another valid comment about Emacs back then: "Put your coffee cup on
the keyboard and roll it around; it will hit keys that all do

And how many others here have ever even seen a punt gun? Was yours a
muzzle loader or a breech loader? I shot one a long time ago. It was
in a Jon Boat, with the pole support mounted in a hole in the front
seat. Now that was true swampbilly technology. A whole flock of ducks
or geese in one shot!
Kinda like emacs.

Actually, my first foray into trying out emacs was on the Amiga, and a
nasty piece of work it was. These days, I tend to use gvim, as it gives
me a menu for all those commands I can't remember, and decent scrolling.

probably just me but I'm not crazy about any of the GUI text editors and
often just invoke emacs with -nw (no x) and stay in konsole. vi deals
with extremely large files much better than emacs. vi is probably cool
but I have never taken the time to learn more than the very basic
commands.
kwrite is ok, I like kate better and if I am going to do any amount of
text editing in GUI, it's likely to be kate (and I write this with 2
kwrite windows open on my desktop).

Uh, Kile is great for LaTeX, but it's entirely the wrong tool for C/C++, as
it's designed around LaTeX throughout. While it can highlight C/C++, that's
because it's based on the KatePart, so Kate or KDevelop, which are actually
designed for programming and also use the KatePart, are probably a better
idea to use.
KDevelop is an extremely powerful IDE, but also has a pretty complex and
cluttered UI. Kate is a simple editor designed primarily for programmers,
it doesn't have all the IDE features KDevelop has though.

Depending on what I'm editing, I use either nedit or vim as my primary text
editors.
My wife used to use nedit as her primary editor, but recently switched over to
gedit; I'm not entirely sure why.
All three of these editors offer syntax highlighting.

Probably because nedit is an old-school Motif application and looks like
crap in a modern desktop. :-)
As I am sure many people on this list can attest, looks are not always
important to a woman.
I think nedit is ugly, but I am an 80s child, brought up in the
digital age. I know of many people who think that simplicity and
functionality are indicators of true beauty.

Uh, my remark wasn't supposed to be sexist. Many men also prefer software
which doesn't look like crap. :-) Personally, I want my software to use my
common system theme (which is Bluecurve - yeah, I know that's a bit
old-school too ;-) ), Motif/lesstif doesn't do that. And the more modern
the theme you use, the more Motif apps look out of place. Nedit is just
obsolete.

Well i had used almost all of them and in the end have found "Geany"
to
be the best for working with c/c++ projects. Its an IDE but its lean
enough to be used as an editor. One thing i particularly like is
creating/managing/loading tags is very simple. But if you happen to use
a terminal to work then my choice would be vim/emacs

I was in the same boat not long ago. I started with vi which is easy
enough but I have founds emacs is great and as soon as you start it you
can select the tutorial which is priceless. I have found Fedora Eclipse
is useful for browsing code of the various projects whose source i have
fetched.
In the end its a personal choice and you'll probably change your mind at
least once. Accesories => Text Editor is also fine as it will highlight
your code which to me is the most useful part of any of them.

No one mentioned 'ed' the original line editor.
If "learn" was still available I would recommend it simply
because learning 'ed' teaches so much about patch and
also about regular expressions.
After you begin to write programs larger than a screen or
two begin to look at a revision system. RCS is a good
start (yum install rcs). And when you graduate from one
file to many look at "make".

uses 'ed' as his editor of choice.
If you ever get stuck on a slow link or some other situation
where $TERM/$term terminfo are mucked up it is a good tool to know.
Had I posted on April 1 I would have recommened ">" as an editor.
Speaking of symbols -- do you see the strange file "["
in your /usr/sbin folder. Does it indicate:
* you have been hacked
* cannot type
* need to learn shell programming
* need to take a test on shell programming.

This is one of those trick spellings, it's pronounced "test" and
there's a man
page for it. Like "*" is pronounced Nathan, after Nathan Hale "I regret
that I
have but one asterisk for my country."
So you can write

and read it tomorrow.

Time for me to chime in. I have been using EMACs for C and C++
development for 25 years, and vi even longer. While there are other good
editors, I specifically like emacs (and xemacs) because it innately
knows about make and source control. I work on a system that has over 1
million lines of code (mostly C++). Note only is there syntax coloring,
but it matches parentheses and curly braces. It also can be set for
automatic indentation (K&R style is the default). Additionally, emacs
supports multiple windows. You can have them line up horizontally or
vertically. Normally, when I do a compile, the compilation results are
displayed in a windows. In addition, the dired feature sets emacs to
behave like a file manager. Additionally, I routinely to finds and

modes for most computer languages as well as HTML and XML. While I
certainly am set in my ways, I could not practice my profession as a
software engineer without emacs. But, I don't want to belittle vi and

I also has a speedbar which has helped me work on many files at once.
You can download Emacs 23.0 (development version, but pretty fonts!) from

and all others will leave you vaguely unsatisfied.
I've been maintaining my own version of microemacs for 20+ years, because the
original author wouldn't accept my patch for a bug. Since then I have posted it
to a zillion OS's (including MULTICS and VMS) and added perl mode, taught it to
take a plain text and make it a blog post, and converted half of the
documentation from script to groff (at which point no one else was still using
it so I quit).
Also like women and beer, while you're trying one after the other to see which
one is right for you, even the bad ones can be interesting. ;-)
