Maybe, but you only have to do it once. Emacs is not a word processor,
but an editor (and a lot of other things besides).
Emacs still uses the legacy font system (at least as of
emacs-22.3-4.fc10.x86_64). IIRC, integrating the new font system is in
the works for a forthcoming release, but I don't recall which or when.
