I had a little program which I ran each day
as a cron job to mail me the IP address of a machine
in a different country.
I give the program sm.py below;
I can't remember where I found it.
In any case, the program has ceased to work
because the site heliohost seems to have gone off-line.
I wonder if anyone knows of an alternative site
which I could substitute?
Or an alternative program?

Same thing as I said, just a different methodology... Using PHP, rather
than SSI. You can do this with CGI, ASP, and probably dozens of other
languages. So there's usually some way to get a server to provide that
data.

The waiting-time I mentioned was to get a response on my local machine
when running firefox on the remote machine.
I actually get much the same delay when accessing any site like that,
eg when accessing the remote ADSL modem at 192.168.1.1
from the remote machine.
I always assumed that it was simply due to the amount of data
passed by firefox to my local machine.
Do you have your own webspace, somewhere external from your LAN?
Does
it run Apache, or some other webserver where you can run commands, and
have the instructions for doing so? You could run your own script to do
the same thing (tell you your IP address). (See the end of this message
for examples.)
I'm not quite sure what you mean.
I'm running apache on my local server.
But the problem I have at the moment is that I get 3 different IP addresses
by 3 methods that have been suggested, and I am not sure which is correct:
1. Accessing whatismyaddress.com , as above
2. Running "traceroute -n www.google.it" on the remote machine
3. Running the program "wget -O - http://ip.tupeux.com | tail"
on the remote machine, as someone suggested.
Actually, I just tried this again, and (1) and (3) did give
the same address, 95.234.132.149 .
(Yesterday they gave different addresses, I think.)
I can ping this address,but ssh-ing from my local system fails,
or rather hangs:

I have been using wget to check my external IP (for conky).

Should give you the output to STDOUT...
Sadly, I tried this on my remote machine,
but it did not give the same address as
"firefox http://whatismyipaddress.com/"
(where I had to wait for a minute or so to get the response).
I'm baffled by this at the moment.
I can ping both addresses, but cannot ssh into either,
which I take to be the concrete test that I have the right address.
(But I suspect that upgrading the remote machine to CentOS-5.4
may have changed things in some way.)
I'm pretty sure that "whatismyaddress.com"
has given the correct address in the past.
Surprisingly to me, "lynx http://whatismyipaddress.com/"
gets an error message on both local and remote machines.
"traceroute -n google.com", which has also been suggested,
gives a third IP address.
I shall continue with my experimentation ...

That will likely work. But if you are relaying email through someone else's
(say your ISP) email server they may not permit that.
I don't know the features available to kmail, but other mail clients do
allow you to trigger actions based on headers in the email and would be
able to set the from header base on the recipients list. And assuming that
the from header was used to generate the envelope sender address (sometimes
the local user login name gets used along with the hostname), this could
be pretty much fire and forget.

Mailman typically checks the envelope sender address rather than then
a header from the message. Some mail delivery agents will add a From line
(which is different than the From header) on final delivery that includes
the envelope sender address (or the rfc 821 encoding of it). But that line
isn't part of the message until final delivery.
There is a chance that this is the check being used to thwart the original
poster. But it's also possible that the mailman server is firewalled.
If his university has a vpn or if he has machines he can into remotely,
he might be able to work around that limitation.

I don't know if it will be useful, but have you considered using
STUN software to get the IP address?
There is a package, libnice, which contains a program,
/usr/bin/stunbdc
You need to select a public stun server, perhaps from the list at URL
http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/STUN
Please search this webpage for "Public STUN servers"
You might try something like the command:
stunbdc -4 stun.ekiga.net
Please note: I cannot test this suggestion.
I am no longer behind NAT.
I looked at other stun clients but couldn't figure out how to get
the information easily without examining source code.
I installed more than one package, had to guess the name of the STUN
client, run it, as a non-privileged user--forgive my paranoia--hoping
the program would give me some information on what it was and how
to use it.
I wish there was more, and better documentation, on these STUN packages.

I didn't suggest, or mean to suggest, that I had any problem with dyndns
because I was running OpenVPN.
The only problem I have had with dyndns is that I haven't been able
to use a domain name I bought from EuroDNS,
although both eurodns and dyndns mention the other in their documentation.
With openvpn, it depends on how you set it up as to if you are
joining the remote network, or just the remote machine.
I'm just setting up the remote machine as a client.
I guess I would quite like to set up a remote LAN,
and join that to my local LAN.
I didn't know that was possible with openVPN.
(Are you using a bridged
connection on one or both ends, or have you set up IP tables and
routing to do the same thing?)
I'm running shorewall on my local server,
and allow openvpn traffic through with that.
(I also had to open a pin-hole on my local ADSL modem.)
With ssh it is usually a machine to
machine connection, but you can also get fancy with port forwarding
over ssh. I used to forward port 25 over an ssh connection so that
my outgoing mail was coming from the "local" machine as far as the
mail server on the remote machine was concerned.

I guess I could look at the code for this
and run it to post the IP address to me.
You can probably get by with just changing /etc/ddclient.conf.
Uncomment the "#mail=root" line, and change it to mail the messages
to whoever you want. (Assuming you have outgoing mail set up.)
Configure the "use=" line to what ever you need on that machine, and
do not set up any dynamic DNS service to be updated.
I have not tried it, but it should work...

What you seem to want is the ADSL modem's IP address.
I guess you could construct a shell script that contains a line with
/usr/bin/curl -u user:pass http:embedded-modem-url > /tmp/modemstatus
Then use some editing in the script to find the ip address in the
/tmp/modemstatus file, and email yourself with the ip address once it is
found from within the script by doing a manual send. Finally once the mail
has been sent then remove the temporary file?
Then run the script from a cron job periodically. I used to use a scheme
like this some years ago for a friend with a dynamic ip address...

ifconfig only seems to give the local 192.168.*.* address.
Is there some way of getting it to tell the true IP address?
(The remote machine is attached to an ADSL modem.
I can get the IP address by accessing the modem,
but I am not sure how I could automate this.

What you seem to want is the ADSL modem's IP address.
Emailing yourself the (truncated to the first lines) output of a
"traceroute -n google.com" on your box should be enough to give you
the modem's external IP address. It will be the first external address
(and the first address if you do not have a router between it and your
box).

Why not use a Dynamic DNS client and set up a hostname on a free DDNS
domain? That way you don't have to rely on a script like this, just use
something that goes out and updates the DDNS server every day or twice a
day or whenever the IP changes? noip.info is one of the DDNS systems I use
and it's got it's own DDNS script which updates the DNS servers every time
the IP changes, so you don't have to rely on email. :-)

and there are a couple of IP addresses which could be the correct ones:

If it does not already have a configuration for it, you can modify
one of the configurations to get the information from your
router/modem. What it is designed to do is get the "real" IP
address, and forward it to one of the dynamic DNS services. But all
you need is the get the IP address part, and the mail messages part.

Now that you've given more detail...your system is connected to an ADSL
which is performing NAT.
I see others have given you some hints.... Should you want to got the
"site" way you can google "detect ip address" and come up with site
like
http://smart-ip.net/en/ where you can divine the IP address of the WAN
port of ADSL modem.

I am actually subscribed to dyndns, for this machine.

Unfortunately, Perl seems temporarily out of action
after upgrading to CentOS-5.4 .
(There were a large number of warnings about Perl during the upgrade.)
But I'm sure this will be sorted out in the next day or so.

You could download ddclient and change the config to mail all
messages to you. Or you could modify the pearl script to do what you
want. On the other hand, it is probably easier to sign up for one of
the free dynamic DNS services and just use the host name.

Yep, I've got a cron script I run on my machine to access
my linksys router using curl to get the raw html data (since
for some reason curl is better at sending the password) and
lynx to un-html the data and make it simpler to extract with
a perl script.
My IP addr hasn't changed in years, but the DNS servers
keep changing, and I extract them as well and update
my forwarders in named.conf.

You don't need to use any site. The sender's IP address will
be recorded

dyndns?
They can point a hostname to a dynamic or static IP address or URL.

If I understand you correctly.... This script runs on a system and then
emails you the results so you know its IP address since it may change as
it is on a link where the IP address is dynamically assigned.
It has been a long time since I've done that.... I recall I had pppoe
(or something like that) detecting when the link went down/up and email
the IP address..... But, maybe that isn't what you are using....

The waiting-time I mentioned was to get a response on my local

I actually get much the same delay when accessing any site like that,
eg when accessing the remote ADSL modem at 192.168.1.1
from the remote machine.

passed by firefox to my local machine.
Yes, that will add a delay, in itself (though not as much as the
slowness of that particular site). Even doing that over a LAN, with a
100 mbit rate, is slower than running the browser directly on the
machine you're sitting at.

I'm not quite sure what you mean.
Rather than querying some third-party service, which might be slow to
respond, might be shut down, might send you more data than you want to
parse, etc., you'd set up a page on server that just did what you want,
somewhere. You're asking it to tell you what's your IP that you're
browsing from.
Of course, if it's the IP address of that server that you want to know,
that's easy to do, as well (or instead). That's just a DNS query. It'd
update some dynamic service with it's current IP address for its
hostname, and you'd query a DNS server for the current IP for its
hostname.
But the problem I have at the moment is that I get 3 different IP
addresses
by 3 methods that have been suggested, and I am not sure which is correct:
Have you told us the actual named address you're trying to resolve? We
might be able to work why you're getting different answers, and how to
tell which is the one you'll want.

As to why there's different answers, there's any number of reasons.
Proxies and NAT devices between you and them, being the first things
that springs to mind. But, in general, there's two addresses (fairly)
easily discovered from the remote end - the address of the computer that
you're browser runs on (may be a LAN address), and your external IP
address.
Things can get confusing if the thing querying names resolves IP
addresses. It may find the IP, resolve the name, then find the IP for
the name. There may be more than one IP associated...
An example script for Apache,
a one-line page saved as address.shtml:

When requested via any HTTP agent (browser, wget, etc):
wget http://example.com/address.shtml
Returns just the remote IP address, on a single line, and nothing else,
as the page.
NB: You must be allows to run SSI (server side includes) on your
webserver. You must write your page in a manner that the server expects
(typically, using the .shtml suffix).
The Apache manual doesn't list all of the variables that can be
returned, it only lists the extra ones it adds to the CGI environment
variables from ye olde NCSA web server. The NCSA ones can be seen here:
