Hello,
My system is setup to boot in runlevel 5, I would prefer it not. I have
changed it to runlevel 3 in the inittab and that works. BUT, if I then want
to start X manually from the command line, it just hangs.
I'm using "startx" after logging in. Is that the correct command? I have
been using RedHat since early 1996 and that always worked. Has something
changed?

Yes.

Nope, not to my knowledge. You need to tell us what errors you find
in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log or /var/log/XFree86.0.log file. Listing
the hardware you have might also help.

Nope, not to my knowledge. You need to tell us what errors

Cant say something about your problem, but you should not use the root
account that way anyhow.. Mostly its better to get used to using 'su' to
become root for things you need to do. Being root means any mistake
might break the whole system, which is not just mistakes idiots do - we
all do them some times.

su is a command you run from a terminal, so run gnome-terminal.
But if your only installing programs, then starting X as root might not
be the biggest problem in the world :)
Do as you like.
Otherwise, installing program when you have used su depends on how you
want to install them. Just run the chosed program from the terminal..
and it should work.

back to my initial post. I didn't realize it was an X/root thing until
today. I still would rather boot to runlevel 3 and stat X manually, when
needed.
What do I neet to edit to allow root to start X manually. Its weird that it

I meant the
files you created for the normal user. You have
to repeat the process for root as well. If you have switchdesk
installed you can execute 'swetchdesk gnome' as root.

I meant the files you created for the normal user. You have

FATAL: Module agpgart not found
[drm] failed to load kernel module
It looks like something may not be loading in runlevel 3.
Any ideas?

I don't have a .xsessions-errors file. I checke the Xorg.0.log but I didn't
see anything flagged with (EE) to indicate any kind of error. There was 1
warning:
(WW) (1400x1050,Monitor0) mode clock 122MHz exceeds DDC maximum 110MHz
But I doubt that's the problem since it works when a non-root user starts X
or in runlevel 5.
As I said, this has been a nagging X problem since I upgraded to RedHat 8.0

I would:

cp /etc/skel/.[a-z]* /root
startx

startx
Clean out /tmp including dot files
and reboot.
I would use strace:
As a user that works
strace -f -o /tmp/trace-startx-userbob startx
As root user
strace -f -o /tmp/trace-startx-rootuser startx
Look at the two trace files to see if something makes sense.
First look at the stat() and open() system calls to see
what different files are involved.
Pam may be involved... were any pam config files tinkered with.
ls -ltr /etc/pam.d
Check for old and new rpm config files that need resolution.
locate rpmnew | grep rpmnew$
locate rpmsave | grep rpmsave$
Perhaps futile, generate an overwhelming list of Config files:
(rpm -qa )| while read it; do rpm -q --configfiles $it; done
Save the list and look at date time stamps of modification and
look for files and things that you recall touching.
Things like /etc/security/access.conf....

Its worked!!! I think it was something in my root directory preventing X
from starting. I moved /root and /tmp to different names, logged out, then
back in, no go. I rebooted, logged in tried to start X, no go. I moved
/tmp back to its original name, rebooted, logged in and X started.

Just a guess -
Create a new user using the GUI method. Then as root,
copy the entire directory and subdirectories to /root.
Make sure all files have chmod at root.root. Sounds
like something is corrupt. If this doesn't work,
reinstall.

Does it hang as in the computer hangs, or does it hang like
in you dont see your desktop (Gnome/KDE)?
Perhaps its not configured to start a desktop, so just X starts?
Just guessing though..
Hello Kent,
No the computer itself does not hang. Just X. I can do a
crtl-alt-backspace and exit out. All I get is the X cursor.
In runlevel 5, it starts gnome.
