It seems there are display issues with the Intel i915 chipset (onboard video)?
I upgraded to the latest:
mesa-dri-drivers xorg-x11-drv-i915
but it hasn't helped . . (F9 was OK).

It hasn't helped with what? You need to be more specific.
The thing that is most noticeable is that screen redraws seem slower and jerky. The other effect seems limited to Firefox - parts of the screen (usually the header area) do not redraw until the pointer is moved over the area. I have been assuming this is a video driver problem . .
