newbie hard drives don't show
by David Branine
I have 3 external scsi hard drives and 1 external
firewire hard drive, all used for storage. The scsi
card and firewire card are listed in hardware, but the
drives don't show. I need help to mount them or
whatever you call it so that they show and I can use them.

new memory = more swap?
by Craig Thomas
I have 256MB ram and a 502MB swap, and want to increase to 384MB ram, [i
know, i know it's an old machine]. I've read in the RH manual and else
where that double the amount of ram is "right". If I want more swap but
don't have any unpartitioned space left, what are my options? (I do,
however, have lots of free space on my drive).
TIA

Periodic, temporary screen weirdness. (FC1 / Matrox Millenium)
by Scott Merritt
After using the machine for a while, everything will be fine and
*boom*. It appears to change the resolution and then I get thrown back
into my X session but it's all screwed up. There's some funky lines on
the top half of the display and everything seems to be frozen. I can
sort of see an outline of the windows open, but I can't do anything. If
I hit the keyboard or use the mouse while in this state, it will change
things around by the time it comes back.
But, every time it does this I get to sit there for a good 10 seconds
before it returns, all back to normal. It seems to do this about every
10 minutes or so.
I thought, maybe it was the screen saver, so I changed it to something
else. Then I turned it off. Although I'm actively using the machine,
one wouldn't think that to be the problem. I've tried changing the
resolution, refreshrate, color depth, etc. I've kept up to date with my
packages, so I'm not sure what's going on. I don't have any fancy
hardware going on.
Everything else works great, but this does get pretty annoying. Any ideas?

Given the netmask (255.255.252.0), the IP/network address shown above looks
to be correct to me.
Long pause...
Well, except for windoze brain dead TCP/IP stack calculating a classful
broadcast address instead of classless. The correct broadcast address (given
the netmask) should be 24.159.203.255. Oh, and how about the 20 hop metric.
Gezzz! I'm surprised this system is even working on the network.

Re: fedora shop
by duncan brown
how about a fedora fedora? not that anyone would be caught dead wearing one =] i havn't noticed any official logo or anything that you would lend itself to ''fashion'' wear... in the mean time you can go out to the local mall and get an embroidered cap for $20 or so with whatever you want on it from one of those little kiosks.

Not so much a case of offending more a case of helping you
to get an answer. To anyone using threading your post pops up
in the middle of a thread.
Worse if the user has a mail reader that allows threads to be contracted
and the thread you chose to "Hijack" is not one
he is interested in he will only then see the first posting of that
thread and never see your post. That person could just be the one with
the answer.
Hope that helps.

Rats caught by what I was trying to illustrate.
By hitting reply I continued it under the zip-drive thread.
Which would have been KO under a "fedora shop" thread

Just updated to Fedora, won't boot in SMP
by Troy Brown
Hello all,
I just upgraded to Fedora 1 from RH9. Everything is working well except
when I try to boot into the SMP kernel. Right before running the INIT
process the server just hangs. When I chose the non-smp option, it blows
right by the same spot, and give the standard "Setting INIT level 3"
I am running Dell 2650 Dual XEON 2.8GHz with 2GB RAM and a whole lot of disk
space in RAID5. I just added the acpi=off variable to the smp kernel line,
thinking that might help. It didn't. Neither did upgrading to the lasted
BIOS from DELL. Any help would be appreciated, I am relatively new at this,
and it has always just worked in the past.

Wine, DC120 cam, and OneTouch Scanner problems.
by Jim Sims
I've read all I can find, including searching in the archives, and am
still stuck.
I have dloaded Wine, and clicked on the icon of the RPM file to install,
and Wine still won't work. It only gives me an "open with" box when I
try to access Notebook.exe.
My DC120 camera is found with no problem when booting into "root" but
not found in user boot into KDE. The "Digital Camera Tool" won't "add"
it, and I don't know what port to list. It is a serial port, and there
are COM1 & COM2 on my motherboard.
I have a Visioneer OneTouch 6600 USB scanner. It is found in my USB
components, but won't work or configure.
Both the scanner and camera work fine in Win98SE, but I am trying to get
away from Win altogether.
Help?
Jim
