Modem Lights

Has anyone been able to get the Modem Lights application working
properly? I've got as far as getting it to flash but not the vital part
of conneting and disconnecting.

Packet "Mixing" Between Multiple NICs on Host

In, perhaps, a misguided desire for elegance, I moved our DNS server from an
aged and infirm host onto our existing file/mail server (Dell PowerEdge/2450
w/dual PIII/866 CPUs and 2GB RAM, running Fedora Core 1 w/all updates). Since
the DNS server sat on a different subnet, I added a second NIC to the
file/mail server and created the appropriate files in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts (ifcfg-eth1 and route-eth{0,1}).
"route -n" shows:

The problem is that although packets received from the two subnets arrive
through the corresponding device, *packets sent to a host on a subnet other
than 128.139.197.0 exit through eth1.*
Running "ping 128.139.206.12" from a host on the 128.139.206.0 subnet shows
that packets exit via eth1, rather than via eth0:

I understand that this is because the metric for eth1 is "0", while the metric
for eth1 is "1". If I understand correctly, changing the metric for eth0 to
"0" would mean that every packet would be sent to *both* interfaces, giving me
a 50% packet loss.
Is there a way to configure routing on this server so that a packet's
source-address is "honored" by the system when responding?
worst-case, I'll cobble together a separate DNS server from an unused PIII/500...

Segmentation fault

I have just tried to install an rpm and the process stopped part way
through and announced Segmentation Fault.
Is this a hardware or software problem? I am suspecting that this means
I had a corrupt download. More importantly ... whats the answer.

motherboard decision help

Gang:
I'm about to buy a bunch of parts to build a new machine, and am looking
for suggestions/referrals on the motherboard to use.
I'm interested in an Athlon XP 2600+ (because that seems to be the sweet
spot, pricewise) and there are a ton of motherboards that can support
that processor.
One MB that has caught my eye is the Gigabyte GA-7VT600-L, a Via KT600
chipset board. It also has integrated audio and LAN, using Realtec ALC-655
audio chipset and Realtec 8101L 10/100 LAN chipset. I'd appreciate it if
any of you know of how well this board and these chipsets are supported
in a modern Linux if you'd let me know. This Gigabyte board can be
purchased today for US$63 from newegg (not a plug, just a fact).
Alternatively, I'd also appreciate suggestions for similarly priced boards
that are known to work well (I'd like to not go much over about $80). (I'm
leaning away from an Nvidia chipset board merely because I don't want to
depend on nvidia for closed-source drivers for the board, though I could
perhaps be convinced otherwise!) One small caveat is I need two serial
ports, and some new boards come with only one (I'm using both a serial modem
and serial UPS).
I'm not certain which LInux I'm ultimately going to end up using either,
but probably one of Fedora FC1/FC2, or maybe one of the RHEL 3 derivatives,
Whitebox or Tao.
Feedback will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

I had a look at the Fedora site and it wasn't much help.
Will now check the Redhat mob and see they they had to say with
reference to their last version.

when you open /etc/host as root, you can see
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
and now just add user32.supernet.pl behind localhost. In my /etc/hosts
it looks like this :

Hi guys,
I'm rather new to Linux and especially to networking. I got a bandwidth connection recently. It is provided by my cable TV operator and works out of the box. I didn't need to configure anything for Fedora. Unfortunately when I reinstalled my Fedora system, instead of localhost.localdomain in the bottom right corner of my log-in screen I have user32.supernet.pl. What is worse, while logging in, the error message appears informing, that the system does not have an e-mail address for user32 and Gnome may not work inappropriately. I'm asked to adjust /etc/host but have no clue what to include in it. Gnome actually works, but this error message is really getting on my nerves.
How can I restore settings back to default without loosing network access?

Gimp and True Type Fonts

I have installed it in FC1 and it is available in all my other apps like
OO, except for gimp. Is there another way?

No Mixer?

Recently the power went out in my home, and it was off for a number of
hours. When the power was restored, my box powered back up. To my
surprise though as I logged into Xserver is that I get no sound. I
noticed the KMix icon down in my panel had and X by it. When I clicked
on it asks me which mixer to use. There is no mixer to select :( .
Fedora detects my sound card so I know its not an issue with that. I'm
wondering if its an issue with the drivers. I just cant believe a power
outage would cause this. If anyone has any ideas I surely welcome them. :)

Disappearing data in Calc

Background:
Running OOo 1.1.0 under Redhat7.3. Constructed medical expense records for
last year for tax purposes. Saved in native format as well as .xls. Sorted
and saved this in the same formats as above.
Problem:
Opened one of the files today and all data was gone. Only the column
headers remained. Tried with another file and 90% of the data was gone.
The remaining two files also had 90% of the data missing. Tried again
later and all the data was present in one file (sorry, I don't remember
which format) and either completely gone or 90% gone in the remaining
three. An hour later data 90% missing in all four files.
Out of desperation I ran the repair script from setup after which all the
data was present in one file (probably coincidental) and 90% missing in
the others. I saved the good file in both formats and we'll see what happens.
I've been using OOo for a month or so and this is the first time this
problem has occurred. I was on the verge of formatting my Windows
partition and being Microsoft free. Now I'm understandably reticent.
Any Ideas gratefully considered.
