Thanks both - you got me onto the correct track, and between you I got it
working.
Jeremy - your references were very useful, and got me to fix the 'sources'
file, and update to rhn-applet-2.1.4-3.i386.rpm, but it still was not
working.
Alexander - your "# up2date default" then got it working, based on yum
rather
than a RHN service/channel I assume.
To 'tchung' - your articles:
TUTORIAL: up2date
HOWTO: How to fix rhn-applet
are good, but are missing a couple of things - if someone has FC1 (like me):
1) the line: up2date default
should be commented out of the 'sources' file.
2) that got the update system working - but the first time you run it, I
would
suggest ONLY updating the 'up2date' rpm's. That then fixed the 'sources'
file anyway.
After that, it will happily do the updating...
BUT - I still have a couple of questions (of course):
1) some of the RPM's are coming through with
"The package **** does not have a valid GPG signature"
I'm choosing to continue (because choosing stop cancels the whole process),
but does that mean the package is still downloaded/installed ? Or is it
skipped
and the rest of the up2date process left to continue ?
2) Is the file 'systemid' still needed ? This is left over from my RHN
service, and
I assume its no longer needed. Unlike the file 'up2date', which still
contains the
configuration for up2date.
NB. people still need to run up2date-config, but not rhn_register - can you
add
that to your articles too.
Thanks,
John.

Local host login and password?
by Brubaker, Bryan (For. Sci.)
I just installed a copy of Fedora Core 1 and upon reboot I get a prompt
for a local host login and password... I don't remember reading anything
about this in documentation nor during the install (though I wasn't
present for most of it). Every combination I could think of does not
work. Is there a default? How can I determine what I need to log in?
Thanks!

Have you noticed that you post your replies at the top of the message
while everyone else is posting at the bottom?
Anyhow, I grabbed the binaries for Fedora from here:
http://clamav.sourceforge.net/binary.html#pagestart
If you're not going to scan email in real-time, you don't need
clamav-mailter.
Anything more about Clam should probably be moved to the ClamAV mailing
list.

Make a distro from installation
by Chadley Wilson
Guys I am sure I has bee discussed before,
Where do you get the docs on how I can turn my current installation into
a distro.
Basiclly what I must have is a recovery cd.
But I am unsure of which route to take.
I have not added any thing to the distro except for some drivers.
and run some updates on the existing packages.
It will be used for mass production of pcs aimed at the home-user
market.
We have about 10 different specs and I have incorporated into my "image"
support for all the systems. In other words I have one hard drive and It
works on plugin with a few hardware changes detected by kudza on ten
different spec systems. I have a few kernels in in grub. One is the
stock FC1 and the other two are the amd 64 and intel 64 and the smp. We
will just edit the grub.conf for the relevant spec and remove the
unwanted entries
So any ideas would be appreciated,
What we aim to do here is give the client a set of cds free with the
system that he/she purchases and if they bugger up the system then they
can simply reload from the cds.
They will obviously get advice telephonically. The idea is to have a
std disc that my support techs can learn to use for a system re-install
/ recovery / repair both telephonically and onsite.

FTP'd files are files, however they got there. ClamAV can scan them.
What it does with them is up to you. ClamAV scans for more than 20,000
viruses.
Why not grab the RPM from their site and give it a shot on a test
machine?

RE: Best AntiVirus for Fedora Core 1
by Chalonec Roger
I am wondering if I need antivirus. I am using an FTP/SFTP server.
Does ClamAV scan uploaded files that are SFTP? Do I need an OS level
antivirus? Some have told me that Av is not needed on Linux. I am not
planning on running windows stores. A user will send a file to the
server with SFTP and a user will retrieve the file via SFTP. However,
both users will likely be using windows based systems.
Thanks for your time.

I'm a pretty big OSS advocate but there is a closed product called nod32
that just blows away everything out there. And fast, I scanned around 30
gigs in 11 minutes. I have not tried the linux version, but the windows
one found trojan/virii on
all 3 machines I've ran it on so far. Closed or not It's won many 'real'
awards. http://www.nod32.com/news/awards.htm

Use USERCTL=yes to enable non-root user for wvdial
by Barry Yu
There was a way to enable wvdial for non-root user by putting
USERCTL=yes in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 ( I found it
in google ), but I can't find the file ifcfg-ppp0 in FC1, which file
should I use to put USERCTL=yes to meet my desire? Thanks for help.

Does Norton have a fedora version that you know of?

I have always run AV software on each windows computer, client or
server, since viruses can be spread in numerous ways (email, ftp,
floppies etc). Norton's AV product is very good, checks each files as
it is opened and the live update feature makes it relatively painless to
administer.

Install Problems with Fedora Core 2.4.22-1.2115
by Jeffrey Briggs
I am very new to Linux and am installing Fedora Core
on a Dell dual-processor that used to have Windows XP
on it.
The installation seems to go smoothly until the reboot
sequence. After rebooting, the Anaconda installer
fires up ok and it starts its routines. It gets to the
part where it says it is "initializing firewire
controller", it gives an [OK] and then it freezes
everytime...I don't know what is causing it to freeze
because it never displays any information for me.
Does anyone know how I can begin to troubleshoot this
installation?
Thanks
Jeff
