up2date header files
by Mark Weaver
I'm curious about something... are the up2date package header files that
are stored in /var/spool/up2date needed for anything, or can I clear
them out to conserve space on my hard drive?
thanks,

Seems I had this problem when compiling a custom kernel for an
a7n8x board recently. hdparm couldn't enable the dma either. It
finally worked after adding the correct IDE driver (amd/nforce)
for that mobo. Until I corrected the problem disk performance
was quite poor.

You may need to compile a custom kernel with the correct driver for
your motherboard. Or perhaps get try an updated kernel.

Help with Printing
by Kevin Kempter
I've just setup a printer where I'm doing some contracting. The printer is a
DELL Laser printer P1500.
It's an ip network printer. I went to System ettings --->Printing
and setup a new printer as a 'Networked JetDirect' queue type.
I provided the i.p. address as the printer and left the default port of 9100.
Next I selected Dell as the manufacturer and i only see two options:
M5200 and S2500
I've tried both with the same behavior:
If I print from openoffice writer it works perfecty. If I print from Kate, or
Kmail the left margin (including some of th text on the left side of the
page) is cut off (i.e. the print image is shifted too far to the left on the
page).
Any thoughts??

CD mounting problems.
by akonstam@trinity.edu
Has anyone noticed problems of certain CD produced by a CD writer not
readable on certain machines but can be read on other machinesr?
It seems in our case comercial CDs can be read on machines that can't
read CD+R CDs.

Make Gnome app look like KDE
by Ron Siven
Nothing bugs me more than an app that doesn't do what I ask it to. I
made the choice to go with KDE for various reasons, one of which is look
& feel. I would like all of my apps to run under my L&F of choice. Can
someone please point me toward instructions on how to force
Gnome-looking apps to run looking like those in KDE? I've spent a good
amount of time on Google and the various KDE sites. I can't seem to
find it. Any pointers are appreciated. Thanks!

How to start a program that must be run from a shell
by Claude Jones
Excuse me if this is another answer in my face question:
I have a simple program - in order to run it, I have to open a shell and
type in the program name and arguments; it then opens a second shell
or window depending on the arguments and runs - this is dosemu for the
inquisitive a 'dos in a box' program to run dos legacy stuff.
I would like to create a simple executable script that I could place on
my desktop to run this sequence. I can't figure out how. I've tried
simply writing a one line file that contains the program and arguments,
and making that executable, but that doesn't work. I think there's that
extra step of invoking a shell first that has to happen. If I press
alt-f2 and type in the program in the command window, that works, so how
do I turns those two steps into one executable?

Terminal problem with FC3 in X, but works fine in text terminal.
by Michael D. Setzer II
I noticed when I upgraded to FC3 that nano would do not work as
before when paging down in a script. It would keep about the first
quarter of the page as the first page, and the rest of the next pages.
Not a problem, since I could use gedit, and it worked fine. It would
work just fine if I use Ctrl-Alt F1 to open a regular terminal window.
I've now run into the same type of problem when using the systems
to access our AS/400 with tn5250, when working on longer souce
code, the page down displays the same problems, but again works
fine when opened in a regular terminal windown instead of a
terminal window from X.
No problems with FC1 or FC2 in the past. Is there a way to fix this
problem, I would like to have my students use Linux more, but
access to the AS/400 is required for a number of our courses.

Gmail thread properly?
by Phil
When I try to reply with Gmail and snip out pieces of a post, Gmail
does not seem to do it right, sometimes it will treat the text I add
as quoted text.
Is there a way to get Gmail to work properly or should I use a
different email client?
And if so which one is the best to use (under Windoze)?
Thank.

Well, thats odd. In my case it was because AOL were providing a very
limited environment; just enough to allow their private tunnel to get
started.
I solved this by running ethereal under XP and then under Linux,
comparing the opening of the connection. It turned out that from the IP
provided by the ADSL connect (WW.XX.YY.ZZ) a UDP echange with WW.XX.YY.1
port 7427 took place. This was a 1 packet submission followed by a 1
packet return - the address of a different machine. Then a tunnel was
opened to the new machine with some complex handshaking, but this was
already included in the 'penggy' package.
So I have made a private version of penggy which does the UDP lookup
and then opens the tunnel.
Anyway, the point is most users seem not to need all this. Not sure
why. So I guess the problem in your case will be different, (not AOL)
but maybe you need to establish some sort of extra tunnel too?
How did you know which ppp mode to use?
