i can see numerous messages generated in /var/log/messages when i plug

use to refer to each new port. thanks.

Any Product like SUS (Software update service)?
by Ceyhun KIRMIZITAS
I.m used to managing redhat servers running free versions of RH.
I started to deploy RH servers running AS3.2 and I am a little confused
about what is the best way to keep uptodate my fedoras and ASs.
the Microsoft SUS can do followings:
1- SUS allows customers to install a service that can download all
critical updates and security updates and service packs as they are posted
to the Microsoft Windows® Update Web site
2- When administrators have approved these updates, SUS will automatically
make them available to all preconfigured servers running Microsoft Windows
Server 2003 and Windows 2000, as well as to desktops running Windows XP
Professional and Windows 2000 Professional.
What are you guys out there using?

cyrus-sasl
by Robert Walk
Greetings,
I'm working on getting OpenLDAP on FC3 to authenticate through cyrus-
sasl using the PLAIN mechanism. The problem is that even though I have
cyrus-sasl-plain installed LDAP doesn't list it as an available
authentication mechanism. It also doesn't list LOGIN as an
authentication mechanism. Can anyone point me in the right direction to
get this working?
# ldapsearch -x -H ldap:// -LLL -s "base" -b "" supportedSASLMechanisms
dn:
supportedSASLMechanisms: DIGEST-MD5
supportedSASLMechanisms: NTLM
supportedSASLMechanisms: CRAM-MD5
supportedSASLMechanisms: GSSAPI
# rpm -qa | grep -i sasl
cyrus-sasl-2.1.19-3
cyrus-sasl-devel-2.1.19-3
cyrus-sasl-plain-2.1.19-3
cyrus-sasl-gssapi-2.1.19-3
cyrus-sasl-md5-2.1.19-3
cyrus-sasl-ntlm-2.1.19-3
cyrus-sasl-sql-2.1.19-3
Many thanks,

Re: FC3 will not startup
by Kent C. Kollasch
//I've expirenced the same thing with a Dell XPS T700r, from what I can
figure out it has to do with the kernel not liking the BIOS version. I
upgraded my bios to latest version Dell had for this model (11), but it
still has the same problem. Something to do with ACPI. I get the
following error during bootup.
ACPI: BIOS age (2000) fails cutoff (2001), acpi=force is required to
enable ACPI
It then hangs on Configuring kernel parameters.
I've tried to use acpi=force as a kernel parameter during bootup, but it
still didn't work. I guess I'll have to reload FC2 until they get this
fixed unless somebody has a solution.

A fresh install of Fedora core 3 freezes during start up.
It gets as far as "Enabling local file system quotas: [OK]" then stops.
A previous install of FC2 worked fine.
Motherboard Intel 440BX chipset.
Pentium III 550 MHz
Anyone with any ideas??

Re: FC3 86x_64: check, burn, boot problems
by Scott Elliott
I am having problems with this also.
I have an AMD64(754pin) and an MSI mobo.
the iso checks out with the md5sum.
it boots the dvd no problem, to the screen asking what type of install.
just hitting enter key, for graphical install, and it starts to boot,
mounts the different directories it needs, and trys to run something in
/sbin (sorry, forget the name at this point). so, it gets to this point,
and the cursor blinks at the bottom of the screen. after a few seconds,
it moves to the right, but no * or anything is on screen. does this a
few more times, then stops moving. no hard drive activity, no cpu
activity, and my num-lock key doesnt toggle.
anyway, thats my problem, if anyone knows anything about this situation,
i could use the help. thanks.

problem with NIS server with two network interfaces
by David Jansen
I'm having problems with two servers. Both machines are NIS server and
both have two network interfaces.
The problem is: from time to time, the ypbind client (which is set to
broadcast for a server) finds ypserv on the 2nd network interface on the
machine itself . Only, the private ip range on the 2nd network card is
not listed in /var/yp/securenets, so ypserv is not responding on that
interface. Thus the server is no longer functioning as a NIS client, and
it requires root to log in at the console to restart ypbind to get
things to work again.
Now for one of the servers, I made a workaround by adding the 10.0.0.0
range to securenets. That was possible since that network is secure, it
is a gigabit link to another server with tapeunit to make backups of the
main server. After that adjustment, no more NIS glitches.
Unfortunately, the 2nd network interface on the other server is
connected to a wireless accesspoint (with iptables and NAT configured to
connect laptops to the internet). Obviously, I don't want to add the
wireless network to the securenets file and serve NIS maps to the
wireless clients. Iptables doesn't catch this I think, since the
connection comes from localhost.
Does anyone know a better solution? Can ypbind be instructed to listen
only on a specific IP address or only on eth0? Or can ypserv be
instructed not to answer to broadcasts on networks that are not in
securenets?

RE: Browse Samba server from XP
by Irving, Dave
Now im really confused... I thought that the guest account was supposed to
exist in /etc/passwd? I've obviously got the wrong end of the stick from the
docs I've read.
So what should guest account be? If its not meant to be in /etc/passwd or
smbpasswd, should it just be a random name? (If so, I tried that - and I
still got challenged for a user name / password...?)

Yep, do not use nobody, because nobody probably exists in your /etc/passwd.
Also make sure that nobody doesn't exist in smbpasswd

Clam AV + POSTFIX + SpamAssanin
by Michael Leung
Hi all,
Pervious, I have installed POSTFix + SpamAssassin. They are doing
the job very well. They can stop the spammer sending Virus and spam.
But there is still a leak in email server. If one of our user got the
email contains virus from a person he/she knows, not spammer,
SpamAssassin may not stop this. So I have installed Clam AV. Does any
one try to config it with POSTFIX + SpamAssanin? Would it be very
slow? The message has to pass spamd and clamd.
Regards,
Michael

I added the following to [publicShare]
guest ok = true
guest account = nobody
guest only = true
I then restarted samba.
However, Im still getting challenged for a user name / password when trying
to connect?
Is there something else I need to do?
Thanks,
Dave

you're missing the
guest ok = yes
in your section. From smb.conf
Sections may be designated guest services, in which case no
password is required to access them. A specified UNIX guest
account is used to define access privileges in this case.
