Umask
by Jay Paulson
Fedora's default umask is set to 022. I need it to be set to 002 so
that different users within the same group can ftp and download the
same file(s). However, I noticed that when I set the umask to 002 it
changes it system wide! I was wondering if this was a security risk?
My network admin wants us to ssh in change the owner of the file using
the sudo chown command, download the file, then change the owner back.
I REALLY don't want to do this for every file that I want to work on.
There has to be a way to change this and I think umask is the way to do
it. The thing is I do not want to go changing the umask of the system
without knowing if it's secure or not.
Thanks for any help.

Fedora Core 3 no longer includes the xeyes utility as part of xorg-x11-
tools. Is it provided by some other rpm?

Plextor DVD problems
by Angelo Machils
Hello there!
I have exchanged my Sony DVD reader with a Plextor PX-116A and also
installed a Plextor PX-716A DVD writer. When I put a burned DVD into
either one of these drives they show up on the desktop, but when I open
them, they are seen as empty (blank) disks. I can however mount them
manually as my normal user and go to the mountpoint in a terminal. Only
there I can see the contents of the disk.
Other times I can't even mount the disk at all. All this only happens
with DVD's, not CD's.
My /etc/fstab entries are:
/dev/hdc /media/cdrecorder auto
pamconsole,exec,noauto,fscontext=system_u:object_r:removable_t,managed 0 0
/dev/hdb /media/cdrom auto
pamconsole,exec,noauto,fscontext=system_u:object_r:removable_t,managed 0 0
I'm running Gnome on FC3 x86-64, fully updated.
Kind regards, Angelo

CD's play, sound test works, no JIB JAB (wah!)
by Douglas Frank
Being basically just a naive user, I sorta just expected Firefox to play
sounds along with the video from www.jibjab.com... silly me. FC3
detects the sound card and plays the 3 test sounds just fine, so I'm
kinda stumped why Firefox is so silent.

Compiling ftape modules
by Stephen Childress
Dear Fedora List,
I posted a couple of weeks ago regarding my attempts to get ftape
working on Fedora Core 3, since it no longer comes as a pre-compiled kernel
module. The suggestion at that time was to follow the directions in the
release notes for compiling modules. I've finally gotten back to working on
this project. Actually I had stumbled on the release notes before I posted
but wasn't sure how to apply them to the task at hand. Here is the question
I have. Quoting from the release notes,
quote(( "For example, to build the foo.ko module, create the following file
(named Makefile) in the directory containing the foo.c file:
obj-m := foo.o
KDIR := /lib/modules/$(shell uname -r)/build
PWD := $(shell pwd)
default:
$(MAKE) -C $(KDIR) SUBDIRS=$(PWD) modules
Issue the make command to build the foo.ko module." )) #end quote
Now, there are three modules that I need, ftape.ko, zftape.ko, and
zft-compressor.ko. The source files for these are in three directories
under the drivers tree: lowlevel, zftape, and compressor. Each directory
has several .c and .h files as well as a Makefile, but there is no file
named ftape.c, zftape.c, or zft_compressor.c. The object module is created
by linking several files together. So my question is, what do I substitute
for "foo.o" in the above makefile? My strategy is going to be 1) Copy all
.c and .h files to a temp directory. 2) Create Makefile as above. 3)
make. 4) Copy *.ko modules to appropriate directory in /lib/modules.
I would appreciate any help anyone can give, and perhaps it is apparent
that I need a little more handholding than someone who writes their own
makefiles before breakfast. I guess I'm also a little peeved that as a user
I have to go through this, since the floppy tape hardware used to be
well-supported under Red Hat and Fedora releases. Thanks in advance.
