F10 - kernel build problem

I recently installed F10 on a really old computer that previously was running FC6 (perfectly). The hardware is a Dell 900 Mhz P3, 512 MB memory (all it will take) and a ancient Nvidia card with a PCI interface (dog slow). Everything went well, except for a few quirks and a big problem. I normally don't use the Fedora kernel, I build a custom kernel from the latest stable sources at kernel.org. I've been doing this for years on this box without any problems. Now with F10, I can't compile the kernel, gcc dies with a segmentation fault and the output tries to tell me that this must be a hardware or operating system problem. A load of crap! I booted the FC6 disk and did a successful kernel build, so not a hardware problem. I installed the kernel built on the FC6 box, and it works fine with the F10 system. But I'd really like to get this working without booting FC6 every time a kernel patch is released. I did build a large software system (nothing as big as the Linux kernel) on the F10 system and it seems to be working fine, so gcc seems to be installed properly. Any hints on how to diagnose this problem will be appreciated. Regards, John

fedora 9 / 10 and flashplayer 9 /10

I am trying to download Adobe Flashplayer onto my F9 machine. Read Fedora's posting on why its not included and makes sense. However, most of the notes on line are for F10 and its obvious that there is a change on the fedora end with the deprecation of libflashsupport (if I have the name correct). On the Adobe side, I can find different instruction for yum installation for player 9 and player 10. But they have notes that FlashPlayer 9 works for RHEL3 and RHEL4 and FlashPlayer 10 works for RHEL5. Where Fedora 9 is in that mix is not on their doc pages. If I am on F9, do I need to stay with FlashPlayer 9 or can I download FlashPlayer 10? I know that upgrading to f10 means I can use FlashPlayer 10. Also, all the docs on Fedora Wiki were for Fedora 10 and flash, I wasn't able to find a page for Fedora 9. Thanks in advance, Paul

Although one doesn't need to reboot in Linux, only this solved the 'access denied' and 'MTAB does not exist' errors. I was now able to transfer files. Aldo Foot wrote: > run 'service nfs stop' twice. grub hangs after update

Yesterday I updated several F10 systems and got, among other things, a new kernel. All systems were reasonably up-to-date (less than a week). On two systems, when I boot, grub hangs after just displaying GRUB. The other updated systems booted without problems. The two affected systems are a Dell Inspiron 1720 (64 bit OS) and a Dell Inspiron 8200 (32 bit). Has anybody else seen this? Does anybody have a suggestion on how to fix this? -- Sjoerd Mullender

Mounting UFS partition

Hi all, I'm trying to mount an UFS partition from a FreeBSD 7.1 system, but I'm getting this error: kernel: ufs_read_super: bad magic number I'm using this to mount the fs: mount -t ufs -o ufstype=44bsd -o ro /dev/sda4 /mnt/FreeBSD/ Can't I mount the partition? Thanks in advance

Not very sure about this, but NM should be started as a service: service network stop (to stop the traditional network) chkconfig network off (to prevent it from starting on boot) service NetworkManager start (to start NM now) chkconfig NetworkManager on (to start NM on boot) You should also use the system-cofig-network gui and tick "controlled by network manager" for every device you have, while you're at it. Reboot, or "service NetworkManager restart" after you are done configuring. As for the dock, you should run "nm-applet" utility (possibly from the autostart script). The nm-applet is actually that thing you should see in the dock. It doesn't need root priviledges to run, and you use it to communicate with NM. At least that's what I do in KDE. :-) HTH, :-) Marko
