Install Fedora 17 onto a PC with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550Ti?

Greetings. I've got a new HP desktop system with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550Ti video card. The system came with Windows 7, but it has a second disk drive, on which I was hoping to install Fedora 17. I've tried installing from the Fedora 17 DVD but have had what is evidently a common problem. I.e., just as the installer appears to be about to launch into the GUI, the monitor goes into sleep mode and never returns. I've seen some discussion on the net about changing kernels, getting the proprietary drivers, modifying xorg.conf, etc., etc., but at installation time I'm stuck with whatever is on the DVD. If you have any suggestions as to how I can work around this problem, please pass 'em along. Thanks. -- Mike

eject command fails to eject cd

the eject command in f16 says # eject eject: unable to find or open device for: `cdrom' f16 has no cdrom or dvd entry in /dev, so after each boot I have to manually create the symlink to sr0. Is there a way to make the symlinks permanent in /dev?

Permission problems after install of F16 comming from F14.

I have a number of F14 partitions which must be mounted unchanged on the new F16 system. It turns out that I get unexpected permission problems with this approach. I use the same user name on both systems but on F14 I got userID 500 whereas on F16 it became 1000. I wasn't aware of that but learned it the hard way. When I chowned the permissions to 1000:1000 it worked on F16 but now not on F14. What is the proper way to fix this problem? I am tempted to reinstall F16 and force my userID to 500, but the system warns me not to create userIDs < 1000. It is not feasible to clone the partitions due to space constrains so I am not able to have identical partitions with different permissions. -- Erik

I would like to increase the delay before autorpeat starts. Invoking xset r 30 700 does not work. It belches out the whole set of options usage, including: To turn auto-repeat off or on: -r [keycode] r off r [keycode] r on r rate [delay [rate]] OK, so I tried xset r 30 700 30 and it belches out the same usage message. So, what package am I missing?

f17 boot hangs after recent yum update

Well, neither worked. Booting off the older kernel (kernel-3.3.7-1.fc17.x86_64) didn't fix things. Adding enforcing=0 and changing /etc/sysconfig/selinux to enforcing and later disabled had no effect. Rolling back selinux via 'yum downgrade selinux*' didn't fix it either. Ok, this is a real head scratcher. Any ideas? Surely I'm not the only one seeing this. (And this is 5 different systems I'm seeing this on.) The boot.log is as follows. Spot's chromium repo down?

Looks like spot's chromium repo is not available for me -- yum keep complaining about it, although I can load it in the browser... and the latest version is 17, while Chrome is already up to 19 How do I get in contact with "spot" to get this fixed?

Which to trust: chkrootkit or rkhunter?

One tells me, on several machines, that /sbin/init is infected with the Suckit rootkit; the other says not. Is there a way to tell whether I'm seeing a false positive or a false negative? Fwiw, this result occurs both on an F16 machine, and on an f17 one with a fresh install. I'm running Fedora 17, upgraded (through preupgrade) from 16. The installation is fully updated. I use KDE, with 12 virtual desktops (though I usually only have things open in 4 or 5 of them). I have one panel, and the only widgets running in the root window are the pager and a folder view that shows only Home and Trash. (Those are present on all the desktops.) I've been encountering situations where I hit this error and new windows refuse to open. For instance, right now I have a console window with 2 tabs, a claws-mail window (and the compose message window in which I'm writing this), a firefox window, 2 emacs windows, and 3 pdf files open in okular. At this point, for instance, I can't open another file in okular, getting "Maximum number of clients reachedokular: cannot connect to X server :0" I did not have this problem with a similar workload on F16. Fedora 17 not booting after installing akmod nvidia driver

Hi, I am revisiting the same problem that I faced with Fedora 16, and the reason I could not use it. I installed 'akmod' and 'nvidia settings' from Yumex and when rebooted the screen was stuck at / em1: link becomes ready/ I logged into tty3 and then removed akmod nvidia [root@localhost ~]# yum remove akmod-nvidia.x86_64 [root@localhost ~]# yum remove akmods.noarch and now system is booting well. What is the problem? How can I use nvidia drivers without this issue. I am liking Fedora 17 very much and would like to continue to use it as my primary OS along with Ubuntu. Swapnil

Dropbox cannot enable user_xattr in /etc/fstab
