He was told different and conflicting ways by different people and
following different sets of advice broke things. Why should an
extremely common user requirement have to be satisfied by following some
random other user's advice from a mail list? As we can see by example,
this doesn't work that well.

agreed - and he should have been around long enough to figure out that
he needed to apply a filter to those giving him advice. Let's not
forget, the support you get from a list such as this is worth the price
you pay, hopefully a bit more but there are no guarantees.
