If you hit a key, it does get you out of the lock screen, but that
key also winds up being passed to the password entry field as the
first character of your password, so then you type your actual
password and get a login error :-).
Long ago I decided that the only "any" key to safely nudge a computer
without inputing any characters, was to tap the shift key. It tends to
produce the least surprises.
