I recently saw this too with XFCE. In my case it turned out to be a
possible bug in how NetworkManager saves connections, that later
makes the suspend process fail.
Do you see any errors in /var/log/pm-suspend.log? If so, could you post
them?
FWIW I use xfce and have absolutely no problem suspending... but then
I'm doing it on the command line. Perhaps the OP should try using
pm-suspend as root to see on which level the problem originates.
