Installing HP4200C Scanner
by jim tate
I'am trying to setup a HP4200C Scanner , That is not supported under the
standard
sane-backends in Fedora core1, I removed the sane-backend RPMS from Fedora,
and downloaded a sane-backend.tar.gz and the patch file and gzip the
sane-backend
tar.gz and got the source files and then the patch file and you can see
what happen below.
I need help, Please!!
Thanks Jim Tate
These are the instructions to install sane-backends.
----------------------------------------------------
Installation
You will need a fairly new Linux kernel with USB and USB scanner
support, either the 2.3.x or 2.4.x releases or the 2.2.x release with
the USB backport. (Well, I have developed the backend using release
2.3.48 and above).
If you are using Linux 2.4.18 with sane 1.0.8 you will not have to
modify your kernel if it's compiled with USB scanner support.
Important: If you are still using an old Linux kernel, you will need to
uncomment the definition of the macro SCN_IOCTL in
``linux/drivers/usb/scanner.h'' as follows:
#define SCN_IOCTL
instead of
// #define SCN_IOCTL
This will remain until a unified access method to send and receive
vendor-specific USB requests through the USB scanner driver or the USB
filesystem is established.
Then read ``linux/Documentation/usb/usbscanner.txt'' and follow the
instructions. By default the backend will look at the
``/dev/usbscanner'' device, but you can override this using the
``hp4200.conf'' file at the sane.d config directory.
How to apply the patches
Once you have downloaded any of the above patches and the right SANE
source distribution, do the following steps:
1. Unpack the SANE source distribution. Let's assume you want to
install revision 1.0.3. Execute the following command line:
gzip -dc sane-1.0.3.tar.gz | tar xvf -
The directory `sane-1.0.3' will be created and the source files
will be extracted.
2. Change the current working directory:
cd sane-1.0.3
3. Apply the patch file. Let's assume the patch file is in the parent
directory:
gzip -dc ../sane-1.0.3-hp4200-0.2-p1.patch.gz | patch -p1
4. If you get the following text
patching file `backend/Makefile.in'
patching file `backend/dll.conf'
patching file `backend/hp4200.c'
patching file `backend/hp4200.conf'
patching file `backend/hp4200.desc'
patching file `backend/hp4200.h'
patching file `backend/lm983x.c'
patching file `backend/lm983x.h'
patching file `backend/pv8630.c'
patching file `backend/pv8630.h'
patching file `tools/hp4200offd.c'
all was right, and you can now start the ordinary SANE installation.
This is the result of following the instructions
------------------------------------------------
[root@eddie sane]# gzip -dc backend-0.4.tar.gz | tar xvf -
backend/
backend/hp4200.c
backend/hp4200.conf
backend/hp4200.desc
backend/hp4200.h
backend/hp4200offd.c
backend/lm9830.c
backend/lm9830.h
[root@eddie sane]# ls
backend backend-0.4.tar.gz sane4200
sane-backends-1.0.10-hp4200-0.4.patch.gz
[root@eddie sane]# cd backend
[root@eddie backend]# ls
hp4200.c hp4200.conf hp4200.desc hp4200.h hp4200offd.c lm9830.c
lm9830.h
[root@eddie backend]# gzip -dc
../sane-backends-1.0.10-hp4200-0.4.patch.gz | pat ch -p1
can't find file to patch at input line 4
Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?
The text leading up to this was:
--------------------------
|diff -Naur sane-backends-1.0.10/backend/Makefile.in
sane-backends-1.0.10-hp4200
/backend/Makefile.in
|--- sane-backends-1.0.10/backend/Makefile.in Mon Jan 13 21:38:09 2003
|+++ sane-backends-1.0.10-hp4200/backend/Makefile.in Sat Feb 22

Disabling graphical boot
by nejaa@racc2000.com
Greetings,
I am in the process of configuring a Fedora sever and would like to
disable the new graphical boot feature in Core 1. Ideally, I'd
like the machine to boot just like any other distro I've ever used: to
the terminal login. Then I could login and start X if I wanted/needed
to.
Is that possible in Fedora? Could anyone give me a few pointers?
Thanks,
Nejaa

problem in host and splash screen
by Rafa Quintanilla
Hi all,
I get the following message when I log in (I'm
translating it to English):
"I could not search the Internet address
x1-6-00-c0-df-63-25. This will make GNOME not to work
properly. It could be possible to correct by adding
x1-6-00-c0-df-63-25 to file etc/hosts"
I must say that x1-6-00-c0-df-63-25 is the name of my
computer (found thru DHCP). I added thid to
/etc/hosts, but to no avail. How can I change this and
put e.g. Duron1300? And, how can I avoid this annoying
message?
One more thing: resolution in the splash screen is
very low: I can hardly read "name" or "password". How
can make it bigger? Afterwards when I'm logged in,
resolution is OK at 800x600.
TIA,
Rafa

Right after I install shockwave flash I restart my machine (out of
habit). but to my suprise the gamma or brightness or contrast settings
for X are all messed up. its like looking at a huge white screen.
it first starts the problem when the machine is in the boot up process
(the screen with the computer and the progress bar).
these are the files I installed:
compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.118
flash-plugin-6.0.79-1.i386
thanks for the help in advance

bug in network configuration
by Matt Wette
I have a Gateway M500 notebook which has internal ethernet
and wireless connections. When I installed FC1 the hardwire
port was named eth0 and the wireless port named eth1. To
start I configured eth0 on and eth1 off at boot.
BUG: If I use the redhat-config-network tool and, under the Devices
tab, click no-profile for eth0 and profile for eth1 I find that the
Hardware tab shows eth0 and eth1 switched. There is an inconsistency
here.
I'd like to be able to get my machine up w/o networking and have
(eventually) a button that I can click to get the wireless working.
[I would like to live w/o the hardwire ethernet. I can't see to
get my notebook set up this way.]

Scanner and Fedora Core 1
by Bengt Lindholm
Is there somebody with a working scsi-scanner?
My Umax PL-II worked fine with RedHat 9 out of the box. Then I installed
Fedora from scratch and even as root the "sane-find-scanner" does not
find anythig. Fedora knows, that the sacnner is there (scanner -> sg1).
I uninstalled the old sane-backends, got the latest from
sane-project.org and configured it. The same result. Is it possible,
that the scsi is somehow already in use and that is why the
sane-find-scanner or xsane does not work?
What to do?

Medion MD9570 graphics tablet (aka Aiptek)
by Bryan Anderson
Just rushed out to get one of these on special offer. USB graphics
tablet with mouse and pen, pressure sensitive, etc. Works fine if I am
booted into Windows, so I know the hardware is okay.
On starting up FC1, I check the hardware browser in KDE and the tablet
shows as an Aiptek tablet, so FC1 can 'see' it. On moving the mouse or
the pen, the mouse pointer goes haywire and flies around the screen. I
am sure it'll be something simple, but where do I start with this?
I have seen a web page at: http://aiptektablet.sourceforge.net/ but I
can't see any downloads and wouldn't know what to do with them if I had
them!
Bryan Anderson <fedora(a)bryananderson.co.uk>
PS....this is my last bit of hardware not working in FC1. Shame really
as I've been waiting for this to drop in price/come up on offer and it'd
be a hige disapointment to find that I have to keep XP to boot into just
to do my photo editing.

even hooked up. Is there anyone that can help me figure out what to do
to make this thing work?
I appreciate it.
