Xdmxp login to remote machine via gdm
by Da Rock
Guys, I know that the current version of gdm on fedora has a serious lack of support for remote xdmcp login, but I need a workaround! I want to login from a crappy machine using XP to relieve a bottleneck of systems using VMWare and a fc8 appliance. (Upon repair under warranty this mc will be scrapped and loaded with FC8 native as all my other mc's- bloody windows!)
As far as I understand the new gdm 2.2.2.1 offers some relief. So is there a rpm for this or hasn't it been looked into yet? If not then, if I install from source how do I make an rpm?
Cheers

lvm re-install strategy
by François Patte
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Bonsoir,
I have an fc6 install with LVM and want install f8.
I have 3 hdd: sda, sdb, sdc.
sda has 1 partition: sda1 LVM
sdb has 2 partitions: sdb1 ext3
sdb2 LVM
sdc has 1 partition: sdc1 LVM
sdc1 and sdb2 are in the same volume group.
System in living in sdb and sdc and sda is practically free.
The root partition / is on sdb1 and all other vital partitions (/usr,
swap, /var, /opt, /tmp and /home) are logical volumes on sdc1.
My idea is to perform the new install on sda: sda1 will be the root
partition /, and build a volume group sda2 for /usr, swap, /opt /tmp and
/var; /home will be left where it is.
Here begins my problem: I would like, after install retrieve (almost)
all files from fc6 install. For /home, there is no problem, I think
that, at install time, I will be be asked if I want to keep my /home
volume wherever it is. But for other volumes (/var where my dns config
is...) or /opt (where my texmf and some other out of standard are) I
don't know how to get them once the new system will be installed.
How could I access to these partitions for, now, they are mounted on
/dev/mapper/.... but these devices are created at boot time in the /dev
which is on sdb1 and, even if I mount /dev/sdb1 from the fresh install,
I will be unable to access them because the new system is mounted on
sda.....
I don't know how to proceed.... If someone could give me some lights, I
will be happy.
Another (related) question: is it possible, through grub, to have the 2
systems (f8 and fc6) working? I mean, not at the same time but possibly
choosen at boot time? what are the magic command to give before
installing the bootloader, during the installation of f8, in order to
get this possibility.
Thanks for any answer.

Evolution, Exchange, and outgoing mail: setup issues?
by Dan Thurman
I got tired of KMail because for some reason or another it was somehow
capturing and sending duplicates back into the IMAP server. Also, it seems
darn slow when new email messages comes through forcing me to wait several
minutes for scan completion before I can even browse the email message.
So, I decided to switch to another email client. I tried Thunderbird, but unfortunately
the IMAP implementation did not even list all of my sub folders as Kmail did so I gave
that one up in a hurry.
Finally, I decided to try out evolution since my M$ Exchange server is my primary
email server and evolution has the exchange connector builtin for it.
Everything seemed a cinch, that is I can connect and quicky see all my folders,
and other things such as to delete emails and so on. Fast and great!
Unfortunatly, I cannot send email messages through it.
I searched everywhere trying to figure out why I cannot send email messages
through evolution via the exchange connector, why, even when I looked into
the account setup, there is no "Outgoing Mail" tab for it - but reading various faqs
and so on, if I get this right, exchange connector is setup both for incomming and
outgoing, right?
I even tried to setup another account for outgoing mail like I did with Kmail;
one account for incoming (IMAP), the other account for outgoing via local
sendmail.
Any advice?
Thanks-
Dan

Specifying a static I.P. address for a Fedora 8 box - having issues
by Kevin Kempter
Hi List;
I've installed Fedora 8 on 2 of my home servers. I want to specify an I.P.
address so I did this.
Running KDE, went to K-Menu --> Administration --> Network
entered the root passwd
In the Network Config tool I clicked on edit and I see that the "Automatically
obtain IP address via dhcp" is checked.
If I run an ifconfig I get this:
$ /sbin/ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:E0:4C:D7:71:44
inet addr:192.168.1.4 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::2e0:4cff:fed7:7144/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:1250431 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:726057 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:1762907258 (1.6 GiB) TX bytes:49097625 (46.8 MiB)
Interrupt:18 Base address:0xa000
I have a firewall which has the IP 192.168.1.1 and it's setup as my dhcp
server. If I log into the firewall and see the LAN settings I see this:
Name:
Device Name: ixp1
Status: Connected
Network: LAN
Connection Type: Ethernet
MAC Address: 00:c0:49:f4:32:b6
IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
IP Address Distribution: DHCP Server
Received Packets: 4873480
Sent Packets: 6792793
So, I did the following:
1) clicked the Statically set IP address button and entered the following:
-- Address: 192.168.1.71
-- Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
-- Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
2) Exit the network config tool and save my changes
3) restart the network:
/etc/init.d/network restart
Now if I run ifup, then look at the output of ifconfig I see this:
# ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:E0:4C:D7:71:44
inet addr:192.168.1.71 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::2e0:4cff:fed7:7144/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:1562719 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:916632 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:2178981981 (2.0 GiB) TX bytes:62483658 (59.5 MiB)
Interrupt:18 Base address:0xa000
At this point I can ssh/scp to/from the server via 192.168.1.71 however I
cannot get anywhere on the web. If I try and ping google I get this:
# ping www.google.com
ping: unknown host www.google.com
Now if I change the settings back to automatically get an IP via dhcp, and
restart the network then I can ping www.google.com and get a reply.
What am I doing wrong here?
Thanks in advance.
/Kevin

Is a distro independent grub boot possible using a boot partition???

Is a distro independent grub boot possible using a boot partition???
Hello, I'm trying to set up a boot partition on my multi-boot laptop
using grub. But I must be doing something wrong. And I'm not sure if
it can do what I really want anyway...
I was hoping that if I properly set up a boot partition with grub, it
would still work if I replaced the distro with which I originally
installed grub to the mbr???
The laptop came with vista, though I seldom go there.I just installed
FC8 from dvd. I have an existing kubuntu installation. And an very
outdated mepis installation from which I originally installed grub. And
I'm thinking of dumping mepis.
I set up a boot partition (sort of) I copied mepis' /boot to it,
modified both menu.lst files to replace lines consisting of:
root (hd0,6)
[ the mepis partition ] with lines containing:
root (hd0,2)
[ the intended boot partition ]
I know it's using the vmlinuz from (hd0,2) because I temporarily
renamed the one I had for the kubuntu in the mepis /boot dir
and could still boot kubuntu... I also know I'm still using the
menu.lst file on (hd0,6) because I modified one of the title lines to
include the words "native /boot" And that was displayed in the boot
menu.
I suspect that to make grub use the menu.lst that's on (hd0,2) what I
need to do is to mount /dev/hda3 on /boot while running the mepis that
installed grub, and then do a "grub-install /dev/hda". But I'd like to
confirm that before I wing it because unlike my old pc there is no
floppy so I can't test it with "grub-install /dev/fd0" first. So I guess
I'm asking if that's all there is to it?
But what I really want to know is once the grub installed to the mbr is
booting from (hd0,2) using the menu.lst from that partition, will it
continue to boot from the mbr if the linux that installed it to the mbr
is no longer there?
Or will I always have to reinstall grub to the mbr from some other
installed linux before I trash the distro that last installed it???

Adobe Reader 8.1.1 printing does not work
by reikred@gmail.com
Adobe Reader 8.1.1 printing does not work for me in F8_x86_64.
The printer indicates activity, but then goes back
to idle and nothing comes out. This is a postscript level 2 printer
(nec superscript 1800) and it works fine with Adobe Reader 7.
I also see that the printer often gets disabled in system-config-printer
after the above failure.
Is this a common problem? Any ideas on how to fix it?
The same pdf files print fine from Adobe Reader 8 in windows xp, but that is
via PCL and not PS.

Where's ext2online?
by Kirk Lowery
I'm adding a 500GB drive to my (Fedora 8) desktop and want to extend
the root file system (journaled ext3) to use the new drive.
I've been reading all the FAQs and HOWTOs, and they mention the
program ext2online for the final step in the process. But I can't find
it anywhere. Is there a package that needs installing?
TIA!

Finding minimized GNOME windows on a VNC desktop
by Colin Paul Adams
I have configured a vncserver to use my normal GNOME desktop.
But the bottom panel is empty, and I can't find minimized windows, nor
switch between virtual desktop panes.
As a result, if I minimize a window, it is gone forever.
Any suggestions?

Questions re samba/cifs stuff in general
by Gene Heskett
Greetings all;
I guess I'm getting lazy in my dotage, but do we have in our current bag of
tricks, a gui program that can display the available cifs/samba shares on the
local network, and then allow the local mounting of such a visible share by
nothing more elegant than having the user enter both the username to log in
as, and the password, hopefully remembering those items till the rapture or
some such silly amount of time?
I ask because I just spent over an hour trying to get the syntax right for a
mount.cifs invocation to do just that. I hate manpages without any actual,
known to work examples.
Also, where did smbmount go? Its loss means that even if I could have
recovered my even more complex script from the old FC6/etc/init.d, it would
have failed. I can reinvent that wheel eventually but its been 7 or 8 years
since I had to fool with this & things get rusty, call it CRS, whatever.
Thanks.

NIS Problems
by Brent Snow, Mr.
Hi All,
I have a Server with a quad-core Intel Xeon processor and 4
GB of RAM that I just installed Fedora 8 X-64 on. I am trying to set it
up to work with NIS from a RHEL 4.0 Server. We just use NIS for auto
mounting users homes.
I can get everything configured properly, but I cannot
manage to make auto mount to work. I have read a lot of the info on NIS
not working in Fedora 8, but have not found a workaround/hack yet to
make this work (if someone has a work around please share).
I also have a problem with gdmgreeter crashing that
apparently this is related to having NIS enabled on the system, and
something about it starting NIS before GDM is started.
Thanks for any help you can provide
Regards Brent
