Consider donating some CPU cycles to Alzheimer research
by Christopher Svanefalk
Many of you have probably already heard about the Folding@Home
research initiative by Stanford University:
http://folding.stanford.edu/English/HomePage
I set it up on my F17 desktop today, and it works well so far.
Unfortunately the visualizer and GUI do not work due to a Python
problem (ticket exists for it already), but the client itself can be
configured and run via CLI (use FHAClient --help for a listing). I
recommend the whole community to consider parttaking in this project,
it is likely to bring many beneficial advancements over time.

nscd and DNS cache
by JD
I have nscd running.
/etc/resolv.conf starts out with
nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver 192.168.1.254
The 192.168.1.254 is the router, which has been a fast and reliable
resolver.
So, to test nscd caching behavior,
I browse (using FF) over to any website.
After some time, the address is resolved and the page comes up.
I kill the tab of the page, and open a new tab and aim the browser
at same url. Browser again says: looking up whatever....com and takes
several seconds to resolve it.
I thought that nscd is supposed to cache the translation from the
first lookup.
Am I to believe that the browser is NOT using /etc/resolv.conf?
If not, what is it using?
Or could it be that nscd is useless in this respect?

How to setup PPTP manually?
by Zoltan Boszormenyi
Hi,
I need to configure a VPN connection to a PPTP server
without NetworkManager.
The reason: I had to configure my network in a way so there's
a bridge interface so a KVM/QEMU guest can get its IP address
via DHCP from my router and this way VNC can be NAT-ed
from the router to go directly to the KVM guest.
The ethernet and bridge interfaces are now outside of the
NetworkManager realm (NM_CONTROLLED=no in ifcfg-* files)
and the PPTP VPN configured by NetworkManager is greyed out
and cannot be started.
Can someone help me with manual PPTP configuration?
Thanks in advance,
Zoltán Böszörményi

KVM - how to re-install images
by John Horne
Hello,
Next week (hopefully) F17 comes out, and I will be rebuilding my PC from
F15 to a fresh F17 install. This will be a completely new installation,
with the disks being reformatted. I currently have some virtual machines
on the F15 PC created with KVM, and stored on an external disk. Only the
'.img' files are stored on the external disk.
What I have been trying to find out, and seem to be failing, is how do I
re-install those virtual machines when I have rebuilt the PC?
As said, the images already exist and will be available to the F17 PC,
so things like using virsh 'dumpxml' then 'create' don't seem to work
since they are trying to create an image that already exists.
Thanks,
John.

Saving screenshots to vectorized PDF's using Gtk3, Cairo & Webkit stopped working on F17 beta
by Øyvind Skaar
Hi all,
I'm trying to grab some vectorized screenshots of web-pages using Gtk3,
Webkit & Cairo, but I cant get it to behave on Fedora 17 beta.
Got it working on two F16 machines, but it fails on both the F17
machines I've tried.
I get my PDF files, but their just PNG images wrapped in PDF and not
vectorized.
As far as I can tell PDF is support is compiled into Cairo, and
"CAIRO_HAS_PDF_SURFACE" == 1 [1]
This simple Cairo example works as well:
"PDF file" -
http://zetcode.com/tutorials/cairographicstutorial/cairobackends/
Unfortunately I don't know enough about this to create a really small
example, but potyl's screenshot.c is pretty small:
https://github.com/potyl/Webkit/blob/master/screenshot.c
I'm expecting something like this to produce "real" PDF's:
git clone "https://github.com/potyl/Webkit.git"
cd Webkit
make screenshot
Xvfb ":99" -screen 0 200x200x24 &
DISPLAY=":99" ./screenshot "http://www.google.com"
Seems like Gtk3 was upgrade between f16 & 17, could it affect this?
Any ideas?
Thanks,
øs

F16 Mount Issue
by Jonathan Allen
Hi All,
On a fully up-to-date F16 system (as of this morning) I have an issue with
remote mounting directories at boot. The machine's /etc/fstab contains
these two lines:
purse:/share /share nfs rw,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr,addr=192.168.1.10 0 0
mirror:/home /home nfs nfsvers=3,rw,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr,addr=192.168.1.1 0 0
The first, to an F6 machine, always works. The second, to an F14 machine
never works at boot time, but always works with 'mount -a' done later in a
root (text) login session or 'su' time.
How can I get this to work without manual intervention?

/dev/ttyUSB0 changes to /dev/ttyUSB1
by Jonathan Ryshpan
I have a device, namely a Davis Vantage Pro2 Weather Station Console,
attached to the second USB port on a laptop; the first port is used by a
mouse. Occasionally the port on which the console is visible changes
from /dev/ttyUSB0 to /dev/ttyUSB1. I haven't noticed any reason for
this, in particular no change in physical connections; it just happens
when it happens. This prevents some software which handles the console
from operating, since it's expecting to find the console
on /dev/ttyUSB0.
Has anyone else noticed anything similar? Any idea what's happening?
Thanks - jon

Execution of /etc/rc.d/rc.local
by Geoffrey Leach
Recently (who can track all those new kernels?) I've noticed that the
commands in rc.local are not running, from which I conclude that it's
not being executed. systemctl says: "rc-local.service (loaded
active running)"
Any ideas.
