Re: Grub problems after RH7.1->FC1 Upgrade
by Steve Thorpe
I found the folution! I simply needed to do the
following, without which grub couldn't find the
stuff in /boot/grub:
to find the stuff in /boot/grub until I did the
following:
cd /boot
ln -s . boot
Not sure why that was. At any rate, for the record
here are all the steps on how I got my FC1 system
(upgraded from RH7.1) to successfull upgrade from using
lilo to using grub:
[ Install the RPM: ]
rpm -ivh grub-0.93-7.i386.rpm
rehash
[ Use this in /boot/grub/grub.conf: ]
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,0)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/hda11
# initrd /initrd-version.img
#
# NOTE: default=0 means use the first one
#
#boot=/dev/hda
default=0
timeout=10
splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
title Fedora Core (2.4.22-1.2115.nptlsmp)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.22-1.2115.nptlsmp ro root=LABEL=/ hdb=ide-scsi
initrd /initrd-2.4.22-1.2115.nptlsmp.img
[ Set up grub conf files... The boot link was needed
because otherwise it wouldn't find menu.lst ... must
be a better way but I needed this hack to work! ]
chmod 644 /boot/grub/grub.conf
cd /boot/grub/
ln -s ./grub.conf menu.lst
cd /etc
ln -s ../boot/grub/grub.conf .
cd /boot
ln -s . boot
[ Install grub as the boot loader: ]
grub-install /dev/hda
[ Confirm successful installation: ]
grub
[ Then in the grub prompts:
root (hd0,0) defines where your boot partition is
[(hd0,0)=hda, (hd0,4)=hd5...].
setup (hd0,4) installs grub in hda's MBR: ]
grub> root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
(hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exists... yes
Checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exists... yes
Running "embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)"... 15 sectors are embedded.
succeeded
Running "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+15 p (hd0,0)/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/grub.conf"... succeeded
Done.
grub> quit
[ Reboot: ]
shutdown -r now

libexif.so.9
by Dave Smith
I am trying to install the rpm for the new GIMP 2.0 and get an error
message saying that I require libexif.so.9 . Try as I might I can't find
a Fedora 1 version of this anywhere. Any ideas?
Thanks.

FC 1 installation problem with /dev/mdN
by Kevin M. Shortt
Hi all,
I have two 120g WD disks. I walk through the installation
and use disk druid to create my partitions. Then the installation
bombs while creating my first mirror.
My basic steps were this..
- setup language, mouse, monitor, etc..
- using "Server" Installation Type.
- select manual partitioning with Disk Druid.
- create "Software Raid" partitions on /dev/hda
- clone partitions to /dev/hdc
- create RAID1 (/dev/mdN) mirrors by joining them.
- /dev/md1 is my primary partition. (500mg) mounted as "/".
- choose GRUB with /dev/md1 as default disk to be loaded.
- setup Network, Firewall, Additional Language, TZ, root pw..
- I choose a manual Package selection...
- just after the installation begins I receive the following
error:
"An error occured trying to format md1. This problem is
serious, and the installation cannot continue.
Press enter to reboot your system".
This has happened to me numerous times, in three different
machines. I have even swapped disks. At this time, I believe it to
be a FC 1 installation problem.
Has anyone else experienced this before?
Has anyone resolved this issue before?
Thanks in advance.

hardware list for Fedora
by ems@australia.edu
Hello,
Would anyone be able to direct me to a source that allows me to
check hardware compatibility for Fedora.
Presently I'm using Mandrake 10, but because of the way it's going,
am planning to move over to Fedora Core 2 when it becomes available
in mid-May.
On the otherhand I could post my hardware details here, and see
what the mob thinks. Would that be OK ?
Much thanks - ems
ps: Is there anyone on this list from Australia ?

Re: Fedora core 1 sendmail problems
by Homer Sapions
I'm running a server - not a client. On the server I need to be able to both
send and receive mail using SMTP on port 25 to/from other servers. I'm not
catering for POP mail on port 110.

Do you know a command to tar through SSH which is the same as scp but
kepps better permissions and is quicker?
Here it is:
You have bar/foo and you'd like to copy dir foo to server blabla:
cd bar && tar c foo | ssh user@blabla "cd /dir_on_blabla && tar x"
Great isn't it?

Suggestion well-taken.Using old Digest is a habit from Opera mailing List
where submision is not accepted otherwise.
Thank you.By the by,do you have any idea on the subject : "Howto use kppp
