How we can able to work with them. For Indian Language, Is there any

Hello Asa,
Console fonts are in Linux the fonts that your are not using in XFree86
but in shell-command mode, in Microsoft this is called DOS mode. I can
see all the fonts that are available in the free Gnu Linux Fedora 1.91
kernel, that is an impressive list, so for Indian language it will not
be an Indian Summer ;-) How the situation is for Microsoft, pleask ask
others.

Some technicalities.
Normally the console can show 256 different glyphs at the same time.
With a kernel hack some time ago, this was raised to 512 (in this mode
you have no blinking, inverse and other attributes like that).
The font format has a file extension of .psfu.
The 'u' means that the file has information about the Unicode code of
each characters. Thus, would can edit those files and add what
characters you deem appropriate for your users.
By default most distros (RedHat, Fedora, ..?) set the console mode to
512 characters (run "showconsolefont" on the console, or try
"showfont"
for a bit older distros) and they accomodate the following languages:
- Latin based
- Arabic
- Cyrillic
- Hebrew
For more on console fonts, check out the 'kbd' package.
When your system boots up, it runs /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit which invokes
/sbin/setsysfont (script) and loads the proper font. You must not change
these files; you have to set the console font name in
/etc/sysconfig/i18n (initially manually, then from the installation
program!)
If there is no Punjabi console font in /lib/kbd/consolefonts, you can
make one using any fixed-size font (for example, TTF). Search the
Internet for those details.
This is the soft way to enable Punjabi fonts "soon". I think you can get
fonts in the kernel as mentioned by Gertjan but this requires prompt
action and then patience :)

update from redhat, suse, mandrake, debian, freedsb, oh my Gosh I am
touching the weak marketing position of Linux/Unix *) a trademark of

If you get the kernel source, ln -s </usr/src/newKernel> linux-2.4,
chdir linux-2.4, chdir configs, choose your config file, copy it to
/usr/src/<linux-2.4>/.config
Your are in /usr/src/linux-2.4, now, edit Makefile and set custom to
what ever you want, I prefer 's'. Now you have to decide also if you do
this as being su user or ordinary user, if you have experience with
kernels since 1975 like I have, then you might consider being su user,
what I always do. From this point on you can adjust your kernel as being
ordinary you (YOU eg) , the example is the su mode.
# mkdir linux-1.9s
# chdir linux-1.9
# find . | cpio -dumpv ../linux-1.9s
# cd ../linux-1.9s
# cd configs
# cp <your configfile> ../config
# cd ..
# gvim Makefile // put in your subsection title, better be the same as
the dir name
ZZ
# make oldconfig
# make config .or. menuconfig .or. qconfig .or. xconfig
// trigger your parameters
// now comes the slow part
# make
# make modules
# make modules_install
# make install
// reboot and use with lilo or grub the new kernel

I suppose it is a cultural issue. I wished "Good luck" because it is
common in my culture. Even the teachers put "Good luck" at the end of
the exam questions and they did not do it in an ironic way (well, in
some exams...).
There is some time between the inclusion of the fonts in the kernel and
actually the specific kernel being used by distros like Fedora. Trying
to maintain a custom kernel may put to much work on the volunteers doing
the Fedora localisation. The natural way is to schedule for inclusion in
the kernel and way for things to propagate. If you have the resources,
go for a custom kernel.
In addition, a position I see in open-source software is to maintain
private patches and not getting exposed to the international community
by submitting to the maintainer of the package and understanding any
propagation delays downstream.

Sorry foulks, but I am not ironic in my signature, I am 55 yrs old
having m-d type 1 myself (only manic), and my girlfriend has to cope
with cancer, becherev (very serious rheumatics) in the family, illness
of krabbe, with a baby of best friends. That is far from having an ideal
situation for both of us. Thus wisdom told me to go, not G.d or so.

latest Fedora Kernel document:

While the default font on Fedora console is the latarcyrheb, but
I should mention that Arabic is a complex script, and just
cating Arabic Uniode text on console does not give you what you
want. Arabic needs special handlings, called bidi/joining, that
need their external application. I'm working on one, called

So am I missing anything here? What does it mean to include your
fonts in the kernel? The kernel has a few fonts, but I'm almost
sure it's not supposed to be the place to add localized fonts.
